COVID-19 Updates

Due to the current COVID-19 outbreak, all upcoming in-person graduation ceremonies have been canceled. The safety of our students, faculty and staff is our highest priority. We apologize for the inconvenience and invite you to see this site’s home page for further updates and information.

At this time, all upcoming, in-person graduation ceremonies have been canceled due to concerns about social gatherings. To acknowledge your academic achievements, we will hold virtual recognition events on the same day and at the same times our traditional graduation ceremonies were scheduled.

The virtual recognition events will be located on the home page. Please check back for more information.

Previous information

The Graduate Programs Graduation Recognition Ceremony will no longer take place on Friday, May 15, 2020, at 3:00 p.m. in the Athletic Complex, Field House. The Graduate keynote speaker for this event is TBA. The student speaker TBD. A reception immediately follows in the Knight Hall Atrium.

Arrival and Seating
The ceremony will begin promptly at 3:00 p.m. Plan to arrive at the Athletic Complex no later than 2:30 p.m. For parking information, click this link.

First, pick up your name card at the tables on Level 2 in the north hallway. The card has three purposes: it shows your name as it will be read during the ceremony, your permanent email, and the mailing address where the photographer will send any photos that you may order. Please confirm the accuracy of your name and post-graduation address, noting any corrections. Be careful not to misplace your name card, as you will need it for the ceremony.

You do not need to take a program, as one is provided at your seat. Volunteers will direct you into line for the procession. You should plan to be in line by 2:45 p.m. There is no need for the line to be in alphabetical order, but we will separate the Specialized Masters, MBA, and PMBA students into three groups to process into the ceremony. The student marshals and award winners will lead the procession of graduates into the Field House. See Ceremony Map (PDF).

The Ceremony
After a brief welcome, the guest speaker will be introduced, he/she will then deliver the Olin keynote address. Next, your elected student speaker will then deliver his/her speech and then the Reid Teaching Awards will be presented. Then, the student awards will be presented.

Conferring of Degrees
A Row Monitor wearing a red lanyard will signal your row when it’s time to stand and proceed to the stage. Graduate students will stand one row at a time, starting with the first row of Section One, and proceed to the steps on the left of the stage. Section One will graduate first, followed by Section Two. Please form an orderly line when approaching the stage to prevent blocking any guests’ view of the stage, particularly those sitting on the lower bleacher seats.

As your turn approaches on the stage, hand your name card to a program office representative so that your name and degree(s) can be announced. After your name has been read, walk to center stage to receive your diploma cover. Your picture will be taken at this time.

Proceed down the stairs on the opposite side of the stage. Turn left, and stop in front of the flags. A photographer will take two photos of you holding your diploma cover. Finally, return to your seat by entering your row at the end opposite from where you exited.

Graduates are to remain seated until all degrees are awarded. The ceremony is complete when all stage participants and graduates have recessed from the gym.

After the Ceremony – Pick up Your Diploma
When the ceremony is complete, return to the graduate check-in table to pick up your actual diploma. Any diploma not collected at graduation will be held in the Student Records Office, Women’s Building, Room 50. Diplomas that are not picked up in a timely fashion, will be mailed to the address listed on your Intent to Graduate form. Please plan to join us in the Knight Hall Atrium immediately following the ceremony for a reception.
